Pill Splitter

A small hinged cutter with a V-shaped cradle that holds a tablet straight and a blade that halves it in one press. Some have a compartment for the other half.

Why you’d want it: Half a tablet is a common instruction, and a knife on a plate gives you a third and two-thirds. This is a five-dollar tool that fixes that for good.

Picking tip: Only split tablets that are meant to be split: a score line down the middle is the sign. Coated, timed-release and capsule products are not for splitting, and a pharmacist will say which is which in ten seconds. Press straight down, fast; a slow squeeze crumbles. Replace it when the blade dulls; a dull blade is what makes uneven halves.
