Storing vials cold, and proving that you did
Almost everything on this shelf exists to answer one question: was it actually cold, and for how long? A fridge dial is not a thermometer, a fridge that lost power at 2 a.m. looks perfectly cold at 7, and the door shelf is the warmest spot in the whole appliance. The measuring equipment here is the part that earns its money; the fridges are optional.
Thermometers come in three levels. A min/max thermometer remembers the highest and lowest it has seen, which turns "it looked fine when I checked" into a range. A USB logger records a reading every few minutes and exports the history, so you can answer what happened at three in the morning last Tuesday. A Wi-Fi sensor does the same and tells your phone while it is happening, which is the only one of the three that can still save something. A plug-in power-failure alarm covers the case none of them do: the socket, not the fridge.
For the fridge itself, the honest comparison is with the kitchen. A compressor fridge holds a set temperature; a thermoelectric desktop fridge only gets so far below the room it stands in, which in a warm room may not be far enough. That is why the fridge is the nice-to-have and the thermometer is the must-have. The rest of the shelf is organisation and protection: a hard case with foam slots so vials stand upright instead of rolling, a clear bin so the whole kit comes out in one movement, amber bags because light degrades as surely as heat does, silicone sleeves because glass and tile floors have a bad history, and desiccant for anything stored a long time.
What differs between listings
- How it cools. Compressor fridges hold a set temperature like a kitchen fridge. Thermoelectric ones only get so far below room temperature. Ice packs and evaporative sleeves are for hours or days, not weeks.
- Whether it can hold 2–8 °C on its own, or is only colder than the room.
- Whether it keeps a history, and whether it can alert you while something is going wrong rather than afterwards.
