Move and recover: the short equipment list

Six items, deliberately. This shelf exists because keeping muscle while losing weight comes up constantly, and the equipment answer to it is much shorter than the internet suggests. Nothing here needs a gym, a rack or a room.

The strength half is two purchases. A set of fabric loop bands is the cheapest real strength equipment there is and folds into a pocket; one cast-iron kettlebell covers the swing and the goblet squat, which between them are most of what matters. A thick, non-slip mat is what makes both of them usable on a hard floor, because the bands, the roller and half the kettlebell work happen down there.

The recovery half is three. A firm hollow-core foam roller does the big muscles and holds its shape for years, where the soft cheap ones flatten. A percussion massage gun reaches the spots a roller cannot, sitting down, in a couple of minutes. A wrist tracker is the odd one out — it is not equipment so much as a number, and a daily step target you can see is a different thing from one you guess at. What separates these listings is mostly space and weight: how much floor each one needs, and whether it travels.

One thing this shelf is not: a training plan. We list the equipment and say what each piece is for, and the keeping-muscle guide covers why this list is as short as it is. What to actually do with any of it, and whether it is sensible for you, is a question for a physiotherapist or a coach rather than for a catalogue page. If you buy one thing, the bands are the one that gets used; if you buy two, the mat is what makes the bands and the roller usable at home.

What differs between listings

  • Space needed. How much floor it takes to use: none at all, a mat's worth, a corner that stays clear, or a room.
  • How much space it needs, and whether it packs away.
  • Weight or resistance, which is the one specification worth getting right first time.
