HomeGlossary › Luer-lock and luer-slip

What is a luer-lock syringe?

The two ways a needle attaches. Luer-lock screws on with a thread and won't pop off under pressure; luer-slip just pushes on. Filters and adapters are made for luer-lock. Full explanation →

Why it matters when you shop

The luer taper is the standard fit between a syringe tip and a needle. Luer-lock adds a threaded collar so the needle screws on and cannot pop off; luer-slip is friction only. For mixing, filtering and filling spray bottles, where you push liquid through a small hub, luer-lock is the one that stays on.

What to look for on the listing

  • "Luer-lock" (or "LL") in the title for anything used with a filter or a blunt drawing needle.
  • Whether a needle is included; luer syringes usually ship without one.
  • Capacity: 3 mL for moving water into a vial, 10 mL for larger mixes.
